Greenville, SC – Oct. 9, 2024 – Grupo Ronaldinho is proud to announce that our very own, global soccer icon Ronaldinho Assis, has joined the ownership group of the Greenville Triumph and Greenville Liberty soccer clubs. This collaboration marks a significant step in expanding our organization’s footprint in North America and fostering the growth of soccer in the region.
Ronaldinho formalized the partnership at the New York Stock Exchange on October 9, prior to participating in the International Day closing bell ceremony.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Greenville Triumph and Liberty,” said Juan Ma Robles, President of Grupo Ronaldinho. “This region has shown tremendous growth and passion for soccer, and we believe this alliance will further elevate the sport in the United States. Ronaldinho’s presence will inspire future generations and create new opportunities to build bridges between U.S. and international soccer communities.”
Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Ronaldinho brings exceptional talent and international recognition to the clubs. His illustrious career includes playing for Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona—where he won the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 2004 and 2005—and AC Milan. He also played a pivotal role in Brazil’s 2002 World Cup victory.
“For me and our group, this is an opportunity to support soccer’s growth at all ages and levels,” Ronaldinho said. “The emphasis the Greenville Triumph and Liberty place on youth development and competitive excellence is impressive. We are excited to be part of a community that values international presence and a unique blend of cultures.”
Wallace Cheves, a partner in Grupo Ronaldinho and member of the Greenville Pro Soccer ownership group, was instrumental in bringing this partnership to fruition.
“Having spent years developing businesses in Brazil and witnessing the deep passion for soccer, it’s a dream come true to bring that same energy and global influence to Greenville,” Cheves said. “Ronaldinho’s involvement not only highlights the incredible growth of soccer in the U.S. but also reflects our commitment to fostering international relationships and elevating the sport in the Upstate community.”
Roberto Assis, Ronaldinho’s brother and business partner, added, “Our visits to Greenville have been met with warmth and hospitality. Its proximity to Atlanta, a key city for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, makes this an important area for soccer’s continued expansion in the United States.”
Ronaldinho joins an ownership group that includes Joe and Gretchen Erwin, William M. Webster IV, Rick Pennell, Jim Casey, Doug Erwin, and Shannon Wilbanks.
With the global spotlight on North America for the 2026 World Cup, this partnership is poised to bring international recognition to the Greenville Triumph and Greenville Liberty, further solidifying Upstate South Carolina as a significant hub for soccer excellence.
